Salsa is a hugely popular Latin dance style at SLG, addicting dancers of all ages with its cool footwork, sharp turns and the occasional sultry break to catch your breath. Salsa is highly social, can be flirty, and is as fun to watch as it is to dance. The award winning SLG Salsa Instructors will teach you the basic steps, then into partner combinations, and of course how to put that cool Cuban flavour into your Salsa!
Developed in the 50s in the New York's Latino community of Puerto Rican immigrants, modern Salsa is a dance style developed in North America. Today it is influenced by Jazz, pop, rock and R&B flavours, held together with a spicy concoction of congas.
Smooth Latin Groove produces accomplished dancers, specialising in Linear Style Salsa, including LA Salsa (On 1) and New York Mambo (On 2) along with Cuban Style Salsa and Rueda Casino.
Linear, or slot, Salsa is danced on one spot where the partners swap places with each other while remaining on the same line. At SLG you will learn linear Salsa On 1 (often referred to as LA Salsa), and New York Style (On 2 Salsa style danced in New York City). LA Style focusses on musicality, theatricality and sensuousness of the dance, with the essential elements being linear basic step and Cross Body Lead. Dancing on the conga's tumbao rhythm, New York Style (sometimes called 'Mambo' or 'On 2 Salsa') encourages the dancers to relate to the percussion instruments, thus being closer to the Afro-Caribbean flavours of the music. New York Style emphasises elegance, body isolations and efficiency of movement by focussing on timing, control and technique to achieve smooth execution of complex turn patterns, intermingled with sultry 'shines', i.e. individual movements/steps.
Cuban Style Salsa (also called Casino) emphasises beats 1, 3, 5 and 7, characteristically with leader and follower moving around each other in circular fashion. At Smooth Latin Groove, you will learn to use the cool Cuban motion and body movement, including Rhumba, to add a traditional flavour to your Salsa dancing. You can also take up Salsa Rueda, or Casino Salsa, which is always a source of tremendous fun, dancing with many couples at once, while exchanging partners and executing moves synchronised by a caller.
