With body movements executed to funky upbeat music, this is a high impact class for those wanting to work on their technique and express their own personal dance style. You will be able to put individual flare and enjoyment to your dancing, while extending your dance experience and vocabulary at the same time.

Each class begins with a solid strengthening warm up, followed by sequences of turns, jumps and leg extensions, concluding each class with a short combination.

You will need a strong dance foundation, including awareness of timing, posture and weight transfer.

Come prepared to DANCE!

Prerequisites: Awareness of dance fundamentals, including timing, posture and weight transfer.

No partner required as it is all individual dance work.

Active Dance Movement

During this exciting new course you will play with elements of Samba, Salsa, Zouk, Merengue, Bachata and Cha Cha Cha.

In Active Dance Movement we will show you how to dance Samba no pe (i.e. ‘Samba of the feet’) – a solo Brazilian dance with a very social, cheeky feel to it, which can be danced by absolutely everyone! It is simple to learn, and can be shared with your friends on the social dance floor. You will also learn how to make your Zouk look smooth and beautiful; its body attitudes and styling. This course will cover how styling links into turn elements, and how to prepare and execute Salsa turns smoothly and effortlessly. You will learn how the shapes of these dances come about while having fun, dancing and getting fit.

The syllabus includes body isolation, turning exercised, stretching, along with preparing the body for cambre’s (dips). You will be more in touch with your body and how it moves than ever before!

No partner required as it is all individual dance work.

New Crew

James started dancing at the age of five, studying with the Dianne McLellan Dancing Academy and performing a duet in the play Mary Poppins. He also stepped in for a lead boy dancer who was struck with stage fright! He continued his tuition with the Brisbane Dance Academy and performed in Jazz Ballet recitals.

As James hit the nightclubs as an adult, he felt would be more in his element with partner dancing. But finding an exciting style of dance with good instructors proved difficult.

James initially became involved with SLG to help design and maintain the company’s website. He was soon seduced by the Latin grooves and signed up for dance classes.

“This school was friendly and the instruction was easy to follow. I also found that the music was exactly what I sought in partner dancing something sexy and sensual that looked fantastic and allowed great expression of feeling.”

Now James can’t keep away from the great social atmosphere at SLG. He has become an instructor, passing on his skills and love of Latin dancing to his students.

When off the dance floor, James runs the web design company Webnerd in the CBD and spends his spare time taking photos, riding motorbikes, and travelling. His goal is to one day be invited to perform at a Salsa or Zouk Congress

Doctor Dance

Failure to practice is a major cause of frustration for all dancers. To have to practice something may seem like hard work, but really the only thing slightly difficult is just taking the step to do it.

Learning to dance is not like learning to ride a bike. Once you master your bike-riding skills they stay with you forever, and you will still be able to do it after years of not being on two wheels. Learning to dance is more like learning a foreign language. Lack of practice will mean lack of proficiency: like speaking French or Spanish, it needs constant practice to keep it up!

How much you should practice depends on your individual skills and abilities. Try to practice new material and/or material you may not be totally comfortable with within one or two days of the lesson. This will help to keep the steps fresh in your mind, and some things may even then click unexpectedly for you!

Of course, lessons and workshops are great for learning and revising material, but nothing substitutes for social dancing. To get better at dancing, you've got to go dancing!

Tune-Up Sessions & Latin Parties give you an opportunity to put what you have learned to use. You cannot just learn about dancing, you must actually dance to truly master the steps. Practice sessions also help you to learn to identify the music of the various dance styles – you will eventually begin to recognize (just wait, you will surprise yourself!) the patterns that distinguish one kind of music from another.

Dancing socially is easier than it may seem! Not only you will benefit your learning process, but you will be having fun, making new friends and finding yourself inspired by more experienced dancers around you. Once you make the first step, you won’t regret it!
