Another year has flown by and SLG is now looking forward to a third exciting year in 2008. So much has happened since our humble beginnings back in December 2005. We now have our own fabulous Studios and continue to meet so many wonderful people. Thank you to all who have attended our classes, social practice sessions and dance parties. You have enriched our lives and we hope that SLG has enriched yours.

Of course with Christmas here it is often a time to enjoy and cherish the company of friends and loved ones. At this time a special thought must go to special people who have touched our lives and unfortunately are no longer with us. To you all we know that you are smiling on us still. To everyone - dancers and those yet to discover dance - have a Joyous Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you safe and well in the New Year!

Living on earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.

New Crew - Meet the newest members of the SLG Team

Introducing Sunday & John

Sunday Thompson

When Sunday’s mum put her into a ballet class as a child, she never wanted to leave or take her ballet shoes off! Her earliest dance memory is of her first dance concert, where she forgot what to do so she stood still, put her finger in her mouth and looked at the ground.

Sunday studied danced throughout her life, completing an Associate Degree at the Queensland Dance School of Excellence, BA in Dance at QUT, and travelling to to study dance on a scholarship. Sunday has been a founding member of Oddysey Dance Theatre, a member of Expressions Dance Company, and was invited to join the Australian Theatre Ballet as Principal Dancer. For the last two years Sunday has freelanced throughout Brisbane performing and choreographing many of her own contemporary works.

“As a dancer you want to learn as much as your body can absorb. Traveling the world plays a big part in perfecting what you already have.”

Sunday has traveled to New York, Las Vegas and Hollywood where she was inspired by some of the world’s greatest dancers, teachers and choreographers. She loves Champagne and her mum’s garlic potatoes and eggplant casserole; in her spare time she listens to movie soundtracks, “always remixed and eclectic.”

“My Motto is: Dance with everything you have!”

John Hawkins

John has always enjoyed dancing. As a teenager he was obsessed with break dancing and spent hours popping, locking and practicing back spins on a piece of card board in his football tracksuit. It paid off when, after being told to start break dancing at a school dance by some older boys, a girl dragged him off for his first “close” dance. John made the decision to learn Latin dance after seeing couples dancing Salsa several years ago, and got the opportunity to “take the plunge” shortly after that with a friend.

“I started dancing with Ian in 2006, and found that the variety and the pace of the classes were perfect for me. Since then I have been doing my best to learn everything in the curriculum!”

With Samba being John’s personal favourite, he loves all the Latin styles, particularly Brazilian. Outside of Latin he listens to a lot of electronic music and simple folk music.

John also enjoys rock climbing, learning Spanish, reading, playing guitar and eating Sushi.

(“I’m a big fan of eating.”)

Personal motto: “Life is too short to drink bad coffee.”

Salsa on 2 - Tune Up on December 14th

The workshop for this Session is Salsa "On 2"

Salsa On 2 (also known as Mambo) is a style of Salsa that has maintained a dedicated following since its heyday back in the 60’s & 70's. "On2" comprises the Puerto Rican style and the
New York style, which are two different styles of Salsa closely connected to the music.

The music we dance to is counted in two four-beat measures (4/4 time). A "break step" is the step that you change the direction of your momentum. When your break step falls on the second and sixth beat of the music, then you are dancing "On2".

Here are a couple of things respected Salsa instructors have said about On2 Salsa.

"On 2 keeps the roots of the dance since it matches very well with the percussion (clave and tumbao) and also has room for improvisation." Norberto 'Betto' Herrera of Mambo Dinamico

"I love the music that the On 2 dancers like to groove to," Ashley 'Angel' McKenna of Cosalda Dance Company. “Great jazzy instrumentals, medium tempo music that you can play with, and you don’t feel like you've run a 4 minute race”.

Come along and give it a go! You are going to love it!

In the New Format... each Tune Up Dance Session includes a one hour Workshop in two levels (Beginner and Intermediate+), followed by over two hours of social practice time.
