Social Dance Etiquette

It can be intimidating asking someone for a dance at a Latin dance party, especially when you don’t know a lot of people there. While traditional etiquette dictates that the man should always do the asking, it is becoming increasingly common for women to ask men, especially when it comes to social dancing.

People who come along to social dance at Smooth Latin Groove are there for one common purpose: to dance. In other words, there are no strings attached, and you should not feel pressured to do any more than just dancing. There is only one one-liner in social dancing, and it never gets old: “May I have this dance?”

Guys, on the social dance floor let the lady determine how close you dance together: she sets up the distance that is comfortable for her. Hand on the shoulder blade allows for an excellent connection with your partner’s frame while still maintaining a good space between yourself and your partner. Etiquette reasons aside, it does have a practical purpose: she needs to look after her balance, and giving her some space allows her to do that easily while still following your leads.

Finally, after the dance thank your partner. Whether you dance with someone all the time, or it is a new experience for both of you, nothing beats hearing “Thank you for the dance” at the end of it. Always leave your partner with a good feeling about the dance simply by acknowledging him/her afterwards.

So next time you come along for a bit of Salsa or Zouk at SLG, feel free to ask people for a dance, smile and have a great time!

Bonus Leaders

All Smooth Latin Groove students who are leaders and those wishing to learn to lead are eligible to receive an extra class each week for free*.
This is a great opportunity brush up on leading skills as well as just having more time simply dancing, to go over the steps they have learnt in previous terms, and to make a great impression on the dance floor.

If you are interested then please register your interest with the team at reception.
