Does your dance school feel like home to you?
Since December 2005 Smooth Latin Groove has grown from just a few classes each week to being able to provide a variety of group instruction across many levels of Latin dance, of course specialising in Smooth Zouk, Linear Salsa, and Funky Gafieira Samba. We have grown but we never ever want to be the biggest Latin dance school in Brisbane. Being the biggest does not mean being the best.
When we started our classes back then SLG was a small and friendly dance school - often with two or more teachers instructing in each class and it has been our aim to keep things that way. We have grown dramatically over time – however I still know everyone by name.
SLG is small enough to be friendly and personal and to provide great service, but big enough to challenge, excite and to be able to inspire its students. We strive to help everyone with individual and personal feedback, to get people moving and grooving like they never have before. Where else not only your teacher but the director of the school knows your name and is interested in how you are going?
Being the biggest has some serious disadvantages. Lost are the warm personal feelings that you share with your classmates and instructors; along with your teachers to being really know you and your progress. Our aim at SLG has been to create a supportive environment where students know each other and feel like they are part of the school - after all, our students are the ones who make the school possible!
SLG is like home to all our instructors as well as to many of our students. It will always stay fun, friendly and relaxed - like a club that is owned as much by the students as by the teachers. Enjoy your dancing! ~ Team SLG

Bonus Class for Leaders (Bewdy Bonza Blokes Bonus) **
All Smooth Latin Groove leaders are eligible to receive an extra class each week for free. This is a chance for the guys to brush up on their leading skills, to go over the steps they have learnt in previous terms, and to make a great impression on the ladies on the dance floor.
- The free class is available in a level below your current class. Please check with Ian to secure your place.
** This is a pro-active benefit to assist in balancing class ratios.
New Zouk Challenge
As the new name implies is set to challenge Zouk dancers in musicality technique and style. Smooth combinations with an emphasis on flow are taught a this level.
- 7 - Week course Begins 8:30pm Wednesday 24th October
Prerequisites: Advanced level Zouk fundamentals & dance fitness. For this course SLG asks that students book with a partner, as this assists in keeping class numbers even.
Smooth Salsa Tips It is great to see that Latin dancers in Brisbane are starting to catch on more and more to the smooth linear style of Salsa. The catalogue of Linear Salsa includes Puerto Rican, New York and Los Angeles styles. Linear Salsa is by far the most popular salsa dance style in the world today. Whether breaking on count 1 or count 2, linear style Salsa lends itself to creating smooth combos that display style and elegance on the dance floor. Linear Salsa is about having fun and at the same time developing skills that will impress!
- Keep your feet underneath your body (i.e. avoid taking big break steps).
- Keep the knees bent. As a general rule this allows for your movement to be more grounded, freeing your upper body and giving you more control.
- To the extent possible, each step should be distinct and should entail a complete and confident weight transfer (i.e. avoid "shuffling" of the feet).
- There is usually no tap on count 4 in Linear Salsa as this tends to inhibit traveling movements
- Avoid "blending" the slow step with the quick steps. Instead, hold the ‘slow’ for the complete duration of two beats of music and delay stepping to the first ‘quick’ prematurely.
- Try to keep a light elastic feel between follower and leader in all traveling patterns
Use these tips to make your Salsa dancing look smoother and feel easier – make your impression on the dance floor! Of course, if you have any questions, you can always ask your SLG instructors for assistance. Have fun with your Salsa!

Doctor Dance
Q: I sometimes have trouble finding the beat in the music. I start off OK but lose my connection along the way. What can I do?
A: Try chasing the music or being just behind the count so that you hear each beat just a moment before you step. In a visual sense, you can “see” the beat of the music happen just front of you. If you accelerate past you lose “sight” of the beat – that is when you will lose your way. It is always easier to catch up to it than trying to go back to find it. By keeping the music just ahead of your step you will always know where the beat is.
Q: Is it natural to use Arm Styling?
A: Arm movement comes about as a natural extension of a body’s balance and postural mechanism. Try running fast with your arms hanging flaccidly by your side, or walking across a balance beam with your hands behind your back; both are very difficult.
Using arm styling that is linked to core body movement is simply applying good technique when it comes to centering and balance. In dance, during a turn element arm movements are combined with the accent of the particular dance style to prepare or to finish these turn elements. Appropriate arm styling to begin and to finish a turn enhances the execution, not only making the turn easier, but giving it natural grace. Without using arms as past of their frame, a dancer will struggle with styles like Linear Salsa because of the lack of technical extensions required for complete execution of movements. Arm styling is not limited to Latin dance - it exists in Ballet, Contemporary dance, as well as in Ballroom dance, and even in styles like Belly dancing. Any experienced dancer would agree that using arms as an extension of the upper body and the frame, rather than separately from the body, enhances their momentum and control of their movement, allowing them to enjoy the music and express themselves more fully through the dance.

Tango
Join Chantal and Ian to learn Argentine Tango a dance of connection, depth passion and sensuality.
No prerequisite is required to begin Tango classes.
Tango can look complicated but SLG provide a teaching structure to simplify the learning process.
Tango is a social dance originating in the West Indies and which found its way to Argentina where it was stylized by the Gauchos to its present form. Early tango was known as Tango Criollo, or simply Tango. The Argentine tango is often regarded as the "authentic" tango since it is closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay. Today Tango is a stylish improvisational dance that appeals to all ages.

SLG can make you Smart!
Since the increased popularity of dance, researchers have been investigating connections between the mind-stimulating effects of dancing and lowered risks of mental illnesses, such as dementia. The discovered links have been attributed to the cerebral rather than the physical aspect of dance.
Fitness, both mental and physical, often begins with your state of mind. Mental acuity comes from mental exercise, and if you're not sitting at home watching TV, but are out dancing in your class or at a Tune-Up Session – your mind is active! This applies to people of all ages.
The social aspects of dancing, the relaxation it produces and the joy it creates also are involved. The sense of accomplishment and the confidence acquired by successfully executing a dance with a partner are beneficial, as well as the obvious physical benefit of moving around the dance floor.
Many people have got the message. That is why we see increasing numbers of people of all ages having the time of their lives on dance floors all over the country. So whether you are seventeen or seventy years of age, dancing is good fun, and good for you! The more practice you can get, the healthier it is for your mind and body. So don’t forget to put the next SLG Party into your diary, and we will see you on the dance floor!
