Get into Samba de Gafieira

New course starting now

Gafieira Samba is one of Brazil's most beautiful dances. Cheeky and stylish, it encourages both playfulness and grace. Gafieira Samba is loved for its energetic movements, its spirited connection between dance partners, and its entwining, Tango-like leg movements.

Gafieira can look complicated, but SLG provides a teaching structure to simplify the learning process. These courses will take your leading and following skills to new levels, focusing on the frame for a better connection with your partner. You will learn a smooth Samba style along with connection and control.

Start learning Gafieira Samba from scratch without the distraction of other dances.

New course begins Monday 10th March at 6:30pm

There is no pre-requisite required to begin your course in Gafieira Samba. However this is a challenging dance style and is more suited to those with some dance experience.

New Salsa Courses

Salsa Focus Courses
Salsa is a hugely popular Latin dance style, addicting dancers of all ages with its cool foot work, sharp turns and the occasional sultry break to catch your breath. Salsa is highly social, flirty, and as fun to watch as it is to dance.

SLG Salsa courses focus on developing the elegant style of Linea Salsa. Discover new and exciting variations to execute on the social floor, as well as groovy shines or solo footwork patterns. Technical elements of Linea Salsa will be covered to help make your Salsa super smooth and easy to lead and follow. We will show you how to execute clean sharp turns and enhance your foot work. As well as learning cool combinations, you will learn all about that suave nightclub Salsa styling. These Salsa courses will help you to become a more confident Salsa dancer and to have a more complete understanding of the skills, links, and body movement in Salsa.

New Zouk Courses

Zouk Focus Courses

Zouk is fast taking over Latin dance floors across Brisbane (and the world). A variation of Lambada - only more stylized and elegant - Zouk is smooth, romantic and hypnotic, with the long, fluent, wave-like movements of two bodies moving as one.

Theses courses will cover smooth combinations and flowing turn patterns. Improving your fundamentals & technique along the way, you will learn how to make your dancing flow like a real Brazilian dancer of today! Time will be spent preparing your body for the rigors of Zouk dancing. Cambre’s (dips) will be covered in these courses, as well as challenging turn patterns and social dancing skills.

Jazz Funk Fusion (JFF) is designed to cater for experienced dancers. This exciting and active course will fuse elements of Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance. With body movements executed to funky upbeat music, this is a high impact class for those wanting to work on their technique and express their own personal dance style. You will be able to put individual flare and enjoyment to your dancing, while extending your dance experience and vocabulary at the same time.

Each class begins with a solid strengthening warm up, followed by sequences of turns, jumps and leg extensions, concluding each class with a short combination.

You will need a strong dance foundation, including awareness of timing, posture and weight transfer.

Active Dance Movement

"During this exciting new course you will play with elements of Samba, Salsa, Zouk, Merengue, Bachata and Cha Cha Cha"

In Active Dance Movement we will show you how to dance Samba no pe (i.e. ‘Samba of the feet’) – a solo Brazilian dance with a very social, cheeky feel to it, which can be danced by absolutely everyone! It is simple to learn, and can be shared with your friends on the social dance floor. You will also learn how to make your Zouk look smooth and beautiful; its body attitudes and styling. This course will cover how styling links into turn elements, and how to prepare and execute Salsa turns smoothly and effortlessly. You will learn how the shapes of these dances come about while having fun, dancing and getting fit.

The syllabus includes body isolation, turning exercised, stretching, along with preparing the body for cambre’s (dips). You will be more in touch with your body and how it moves than ever before!

No partner required as it is all individual dance work.

The Plank - Great exercise for Core Strength

Having Core Strength or being able to switch on your Core Abdominal Muscles will help with your stability & Balance

The Plank or Hover Exercise will help not only your dancing but will assist your posture in everyday life.

Add these core strengthening exercises to your ab workout for a new way to build strength and stability.

Plank (Hover) Exercise
  • Start in the plank position (see photo 1) with your forearms and toes on the floor.
  • Keep your torso straight and rigid and your body in a straight line from ears to toes with no sagging or bending.
  • Your head is relaxed and you should be looking at the floor.
  • Hold this position for 10 seconds to start.
  • Over time work up to 30, 45 or 60 seconds.

Plank with Leg Lift
  • Start in the same plank position (photo 1) as above with your forearms and toes on the floor.
  • Keep your leg straight with your toe flexed.
  • Slowly raise one leg 12cm - 20cm off the floor (photo 2)
  • Hold 1-2 seconds and slowly to the floor.
  • Switch legs and repeat.
  • Do about 2-3 sets of 10 reps.

Plank with Arm Raise
  • Start in the same plank position (photo 1) as above.
  • Carefully shift your weight to your right forearm.
  • Extend your left arm straight out in front of you.
  • Hold 3 seconds while keeping your core tight.
  • Slowly bring your arm back to starting position.
  • Switch arms and repeat.
  • Do 2-3 sets of 10 reps.

Modified Plank with Leg Lift
To make this exercise a bit easier, you can perform the movement on your hands, rather than your elbows.
From an article by Elizabeth Quinn, M.S.

Salsa Rueda Boot Camp

Salsa Rueda is a seriously fun spectacle and experience!

A Rueda can be as small as two couples, or as large as a space can hold. The couples dance in a circle executing moves called out by a leader. You will learn many easy, playful calls, such as "adios", "enchufla", or "dame". The leaders, usually the men, initiate the execution of the moves. The followers, usually the ladies, perform the moves as guided by the leaders. Salsa Rueda is like a game during which the couples continuously change partners, moving along the circle and dancing with everyone in the group. Rueda is danced to lively, up-beat salsa music, with dancers constantly moving along the circle to their next partner:

Warning it is addictive!

Difficulty level
It is important that you have a solid salsa foundation.
Completion of Core Elements One or equivilent is recommended.

Saturday 29th March
