FOOD FOR DANCE

Your body needs fuel to provide energy, just like cars need petrol. Carbohydrate, protein, fat (and alcohol) all provide energy that the body can use.  All activities require energy, even thinking and sleeping!

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are often wrongly feared and considered fattening. But the most important factor in weight control is balancing the energy consumed (kilojoules) with the energy burnt. Remember, to maintain your current weight, energy in must equal energy out!

Gram for gram fat contains twice the energy of carbohydrate and protein. If you are trying to reduce the body fat levels, keep fat intake to a minimum.  Fat stores (even on lean people) will not run out rapidly. In comparison, carbohydrate stores are limited and if these drop too low we become tired. Feeling energetic at work and during exercise relies on a regular intake of carbohydrate foods to maintain stamina.

Food for Dance – Carbohydrates  Continued

If you don’t include enough carbohydrates in your diet you may experience:

«  Fatigue due to low blood glucose levels

«  Inadequate intake of vitamins and minerals found in fruit, vegetables and grain foods

«  Low fibre intake, which may affect bowel health

«  Headaches and ‘bad’ breath due to the breakdown products of fats (called ketones)

«  Metabolic abnormalities, especially in electrolyte or body salt levels which control nerve and heart function

Carbohydrates and the Glycemic Index

Not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing low GI carbs - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable weight loss.

Why is the GI important?
When our blood glucose levels are stable we have plenty of readily available fuel for the brain and muscles.

- If our blood glucose levels get too low (hypoglycemia) we can feel tired, dizzy and generally unwell.

-  If blood glucose levels rise too quickly this may be followed by a rapid drop.

Include low glycemic index foods in meals and snacks to slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream.

Energy to Dance
A low glycemic index meal/snack a few hours before exercise can help maintain energy levels for a more enjoyable dance session. High GI foods or fluids provide a rapid source of energy during exercise but the benefits may be short lived.
