Music
Paula Lima is a Brazilian singer who began her career providing silky backing vocals for artists playing acid jazz, hip hop, funk and swing. In 2001 she began releasing solo albums in which she mixed her diverse musical experiences with traditional Brazilian rhythms. Her unique musical trajectory is well represented by her latest album “Sinceramente”, each of the tracks has a funky urban feel, while maintaining the essential samba groove. If I had to pick an album that just makes me want to dance from the opening until the closing track, this would be it. Paula is pointing the way to the future of samba, and it is a glorious, smooth and funky place to be. Check out samples from the album on-line along with other great music at SLG's Latin Music Page
The Perfect Salsa Outfit
On the dance floor, feeling good about yourself can make a big difference to how you feel about your dancing. So what do you look for when choosing a salsa outfit? Whether you would like to accentuate style and movement, are looking for comfort, or just like a particular colour or accessory, your salsa outfit should address the features and create the look important to you. Salsa is a suave and sexy dance, so your outfit should accentuate the best things about yourself. Ladies may want their dress to flow with their body movement, or flare up during spins. Take into consideration which features of the body you want your Salsa dress to show off: shoulders, legs or cleavage. To create an elegant shoulder line, choose a stretchy top with pretty straps. A deep V-cut at the front will show off your cleavage. If your legs are what you want to accentuate, the opposing asymmetrical cuts on the skirt will do that for you. It all depends on what you are comfortable with. For Gentlemen, stylish, comfortable pants that will not inhibit your movement are best, perhaps complemented with a collared shirt. The accessories of your outfit will make a statement about your chosen style. A tie and/or jacket can give you a dressed-to-impress “clean cut gentleman” look, while a hat or a cap, white pants, accessories, or even dark sunglasses will help if you are going for the “street salsero” style. The colour of your outfit should match the vibrancy and energy of the dance, as well as reflect your own personality. Salsa outfits come in all sorts of colours and colour combinations, even with a little sparkle to catch the eye while you are dancing. Performers often put glitter haze throughout a black outfit for a “chic” effect. When you are out socially, having a good time you will probably be dancing non-stop. That is why it is important to choose a fabric that breathes and that will keep you cool and comfortable throughout the evening. Ladies may also want their dress to feel soft, so that it flows smoothly during movement and feels good to touch. Whether you are looking for an outfit to wear to the next Latin Party, to a Salsa competition, or just something to wear to an evening with friends, your Perfect Salsa Outfit should be a show-stopper by itself and make you feel your very best. Happy Salsa dancing! -Helen
