There is no place like home!

To be able to share our passion for Latin dance has always been a rewarding experience but to now have our very own studios is just fantastic. With two new studios (or just one big studio) to utilize 24/7 means we are able to give so much more! It is a club house for all dancers, not just Smooth Latin Groovers. We want it to be a place to share friendships, cool moves and music in a spacious, relaxing environment.

Part of our ethos is to seek knowledge to build a base of skills from which all Latin dance styles can be understood. The skills you learn in one dance translate into other styles, making it easier to learn them. Then all you have to do is learn the structure of the new style, and you can dazzle people on the dance floor, whatever event you attend. At Smooth Latin Groove we seek to share our knowledge and our base of skills with other dancers and dance schools. To close our doors to other dancers would mean to deprive both us and them of the opportunity to learn from one another and to embrace our common passion for dance. We receive great pleasure from being able to salute all dancers, their hard work and the contribution that they make. Our aim is to respect others who have something to contribute to our common body of work with expression, technique, elegance and sophistication.

Smooth Latin Groove has always had an open door policy. We are comfortable in the presence of all dancers – from those just starting out to the world’s best. Only by sharing our skills will our body of knowledge grow and mature, allowing us to encourage more people to join us on the dance floor, and to continuously improve the quality of Latin dance in Brisbane.

So to all dancers – whether you are just starting out or have years of experience – drop on by to any of the Tune Up Sessions or Monthly Dance Parties at our new home, or just come on over and say “hi” when you see any of us out and about at the many other Latin events in and around Brisbane!

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance. *Japanese proverb

Scott Davies Magic

Late last year I had the pleasure of working with a world class illusionist Scott Davies and his partner Toom. Scott has been working as an entertainer and a magician for the past twenty years, and has performed magic shows around and, more recently, in Asia.

Scott was looking to refine the visual quality of his shows through dance. The result of several weeks of training in aerials and movement, along with incorporating contemporary dance techniques, was two new choreographies that Scott and Toom are now refining for a new series of shows that they will be taking to the later this year. It has been a pleasure to work with this delightful and enthusiastic couple! You can find out more about Scott and Toom and catch up on their latest news on their web site at www.scottdaviesmagic.com.au.

How hard is it to learn to dance?

Lessons. Practice. Enjoyment.

When we learn a new activity, whether it is tennis, golf, or karate, our bodies feel awkward and the moves feel strange. Every time we make a move, we have to think about it and come up with a “plan of attack” before taking a step. Dance is no exception! And having a trained instructor makes a huge difference to your learning process. At SLG we aim to provide you with the best possible instruction to get you dancing in the shortest possible time. So even if you do have two left feet, we’ll get you dancing, having fun, and enjoying the company of many wonderful people – all you have to do is show up! J

Getting There Is Half the Fun

Your lessons and dance skills will bring you greatly increased personal satisfaction, as well as heighten the perception and regard others have for you. When you come to your dance classes, you have the opportunity to share your learning experience with people like you. The frustrations you may experience are far outweighed by the exciting “I’ve got it!” moments that follow, and if you can share your achievements with others, it makes these moments all the more special. The friendships you form through learning to dance always contribute to your Latin dance experience. When you share similar experiences with other people in your classes, you will learn quicker, and have fun in the process! Joy is always greater when it is shared!

Don't Sit Out the Fun

Are you dancing yet? What are you waiting for? You could surprise both yourself and your friends with how comfortable and confident you are on the dance floor, how much fun you are having, and how much fun you are to dance with! Take the opportunity and GO FOR IT at dance parties and practice sessions – you might be missing out on so much fun, and you’ll never know if you don’t give it a go!

Get into Salsa Rueda,  SLG Style

Rueda simply means” wheel”. Salsa Rueda or ‘Rueda de Casino’ is a group dance originating in . The Rueda can be as small as two couples, or as large as a space can hold. The couples dance in a circle executing moves called out by a leader. You will learn many easy, playful calls, such as "adios", "enchufla", or "dame". The leaders, usually the men, initiate the execution of the moves. The followers, usually the ladies, perform the moves as guided by the leaders. Salsa Rueda is like a game during which the couples continuously change partners, moving along the circle and dancing with everyone in the group. Rueda is danced to lively, up-beat salsa music, with dancers constantly moving along the circle to their next partner, it is a seriously fun spectacle and experience!
